DRIVING
FOR THE WIN
When you set a record for the lowest score in relation to par ( 20 under) in a major, and cruise to a three-stroke win, almost every club in the bag is probably working. But
special attention should be paid to Jason Day’s TaylorMade R15 460
driver with a Mitsubishi Kuro Kage Silver TiNi 70x shaft during his
victory march at the PGA Championship. Day not only ranked fifth
in driving distance at 307.1 yards, but was T- 5 in accuracy, hitting
73.21 percent of his fairways. Such power and precision allowed Day
to beat up Whistling Straits’ par 5s, playing them in an impressive 14
under par for the week. Day’s driver had 10. 5 degrees of loft but was
set in a lower loft position. The adjustable weights were centered for
maximum distance. Given Day’s performance, those settings were
just right. —E. Michael Johnson
