SPINNING IT FORWARD

ased on tour-staff input, Callaway and its wedge designer Roger Cleveland focused on wider soles and loft-specific grooves in its new MD3 line. There are three distinct sole grinds for three swing types across 15 models, the most extensive collection in company history.
The S-grind and C-grind options are ample compared to past iterations, and the
new W grind works well for steeper swings and softer conditions. Instead of two
kinds of grooves across the line like in the MD2, there are three. The grooves on the
lower lofts (46 to 52 degrees) have a typical iron groove because they tend to be used
for full swings. The grooves in the middle lofts (54 to 56) will transition to a more
aggressive edge (in line with the grooves on the 47- to 54-degree wedges in the MD2
line). The highest-lofted wedges (58 to 60) will have the widest grooves with the
steepest sidewall for maximum short-shot spin. The MD3 line is already on tour and
will be at retail Sept. 4 in satin chrome and black finishes ($130).
