O versize putter grips have gotten plenty of attention the past few years as a way to
temper unwanted hand action in your
stroke. But not all versions use a second
calming influence: counterbalancing. A
counterbalanced grip pushes weight toward the hands so the larger muscles in
your arms and shoulders better control
the stroke. One such counterbalanced
grip is the PalmBird Jumbo ($20). Made
from a thermoplastic rubber used in
heated motorcycle grips, the PalmBird
weighs 169 grams, or more than twice
the weight of a typical putter grip and
three times that of some oversize grips.
It also has a unique oval shape, with
deep, flattish sides that fit against your
palms. The intent is for players to feel
like the putter is held more in the palms
than the fingers to maintain a consistent face angle. —Mike Stachura
