Balls with flashy
CALL IT THE Pro V1 effect. An increasing percentage of golf balls bought today are the priciest, most high-tech mod- els, according to Golf Datatech sales
figures. Five years ago, 28 percent of balls sold featured the
multilayer, urethane-covered technology found in balls
like the Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x. Today, it’s 39 percent.
While Titleist’s franchise balls continue to dominate,
other factors are driving interest in high-end balls. There
are more of them, for one. Bridgestone and TaylorMade
each have four versions, for example, while Callaway and
Srixon have three. Second, some have introduced balls with
urethane covers and lower-compression cores for average
golfers, like the Bridgestone B330-RX and Srixon Z-Star SL.
Third, prices for some of these balls are inching below $40
a dozen. All that technology and a lower price? No wonder
more golfers can’t resist them. —Mike Stachura
